Or will I have to "unblock" the player. Can anyone tell me if I will be able to play local DVDs on this Blu-Ray player. Obviously, I don't want to occupy my HDMIs with redundant equipment. I live in Brazil and am on my way to NYC in a week and want to pick up a Blu-Ray. Also, here in Brazil we have a different region DVD (I think we are region 4 and the USA is region 1) but the same Blu-Ray region (Americas, I believe it is region A). I love my sound/video, but am not really a technofile, pretty much in the dark on this one. I am pretty much decided on either the 35k or 55k, for US100.00 it is worth it to get the 55k. Sorry I used the "review" space for my questions, but I didnt know where else to turn, and I respect the opinions and knowledge of amazon reviewers. Thanks in advance;Ryan in Brazil
I don't want to spend the additional monthly cost of up grading my connection to the internet. I enjoy movies, opera, concerts, and ballet. At this point in time, I regard all the additional tricks it can perform as UNINTERESTING. And, this Panasonic does not intrude in the experience with problems. Sorry to say, most of the bonus material on DVDs and Blu Rays are SELF SERVING AND INCREDIBLY BORING. The Panasonic player delivers excent pictures both on DVD and Blu Ray (naturally the Blu Ray is a real feast for the eyes). I bought the Blu Ray Disc player, primarily on the review found in SOUND & VISION magazine.
I do not have the unit connected to Broad ban. I was particulary concerned that the unit would have very good up-conversion. I am very satisfied with the Panasonic DMP-BD55K 1080P Blu-Ray Player. It's a smooth operator.
Especially when it first came in. The high-res 1080P signal was quite grainy until I upgraded the firmware. I bought this because I don't want to upgrade my audio system yet. It is much nicer now but I'm still not very satisfied because it doesn't compare to the 1080i local signals that I receive off-the-air or from cable. Watching "Planet Earth" series there are some artifacts that doesn't look good. This product maps the latest audio formats to the ones my NAD T753 can handle and it has coax digital output which doesn't force me to buy an expensive optical cable. However, the video section is not as good as I've hoped. I think this may be a compatibility issue and my TV is Samsung HLS6188WX.
The configuration and menu features are great. I'm running mine at 720P as I have a 720P projector, so I can't speak to the 1080P features. Load times are fast enough for me. For my set up this is a major upgrade. This is my first blu-ray player so I don't have comparisons. The pic quality is fantastic. I'm really glad I waited for this model.
It also simultaneously outputs optical digital so for the older formats I can let the reciever do the decoding and use the 5.1 features there. Using the 8ch analog outputs it allows me to use my old Yamaha reciever that I really have grown to love the sound from. When on the analog output it gives channel volume adjustments within the player. The upconverting to 720P for standard DVDs, mp3 and audio playback are all smooth and great sounding as well.
There is no downside to this player. The picture the BD55 player puts out along with the sound quality will blow you away. I never knew my Sony HDTV could look so good.
