Crapped out in 38 days. Took over 6 months to get a refurbished PCB sent for an additional $178 + $99 to the service center to diagnose and fix. Do yourself a big favor and buy a first tier Sony or Samsung.
Refurbished PCB only warrrantied for 30 days. Adding up what I spent I could have had a Sony in the firstplace AND not been without my TV for over 6 months, only to be left with a worthless hunk of cheap chinese junk. Bought this AKAI tv thinking I would save some $$$.
AKAI customer service was abysmal. Biggest mistake I ever made. The PCB blew 54 weeks after I bought it, and now it was out of warranty.
DON'T BUY AKAI.
Over two years I looked at tvs in seven different cities and over 45 stores. It was so hard to believe that such a cheap TV would have such a perfect picture.
I stumbled on this picture at a Sam's club and I was in awe. It was so clear.
Disregard anyone who may have gotten a faulty switch or some other minor flaw. See for yourself.
The fact remains this LCD tv has the best picture of anyone. I looked at over 1000 tvs (not a hyperbole at all).
You'll see I am not exaggerating one bit.
It wouldn't turn on after turning it off - you'd have to hit the power button 400+ times before you got lucky enough to have it come on. Then, leave it on or you may not get to use it again. We called Akai and sent it back to be replaced. 5 months later, after 50+ phone calls, we got a refurb TV, only to take it out of the box and have it NOT WORK - are you kidding me. This is the absolute BIGGEST JOKE of a TV that you will ever see. I will give it a little credit, the picture looks great, and the price is right, but you'd be better off flushing the same amount of money down the toilet, you'll get the same results. We had this TV for less than 2 months before it broke. We called customer care immediately and were told to send it in and they would expedite ship another one.Well, that was 4+ months ago and we're still waiting. So, for nearly $1000 - we were able to watch TV for a month and a half, no replacement TV in sight, and they refuse to refund our money - WHAT A JOKE.I wouldn't wish this experience on anyone - do yourself a favor and buy anything else.
Second, the two 5W speakers of the TV are pretty weak (still useable) but it wouldn't be a concern if you connect it to your Hi Fi like me. There are some weakness on this TV. The unit I bought is a recertified unit and I only paid $615, which is a steal. Last but probably most noticeable is the screen was not hooked to its base very tight. First, I can't get stereo sign from the MTS button on its remote.
However, I am able to get stereo sound after I connected the sound output to my home Hi Fi system. However this TV is still able to output bright and nice picture. I have this Akai 37" 1080P TV for more than 2 weeks now and am very pleased with the picture and its overall quality. I also connected this TV to a upconverting DVD player (up to 1080i) with a HDMI cable and the DVD playback quality is excellent. The screen tends to lean forward so I have to put a couple magazines under the front bottom of the base to keep it from leaning forward.
I am still using a basic cable service plan so I don't have any digital signal from my cable box. Despite these three minor issues, I still recommend this TV.
