User Comments about the Sony RDR-GX355 Tunerless DVD Recorder

This unit will not allow you to record movies, anything from HBO, it simpy isn't worth anything. There has to be a solution, but so far I haven't been able to record much at all.Sorry my review is so short, I see many others have the same concerns as I, I just wanted to add my "voice".

I use mine mainly to play DVDs and to transfer old VCR tapes to DVD so the built-in copy protection hasn't been an issue for me. It's easy to set up and easy to use, a big improvement over the Panasonic DVD player/recorder I brought this to replace. I've had this DVD player/recorder for 7 months now and I haven't encountered any of the problems that others here have. The one I ordered was new, not refurbished, so that may have helped. If you want to record programs off broadcast or cable that have an anti-copy signal or download similarly protected shows off a Tivo be warned: this recorder won't work for you.But if, like me, you're looking for a solid, good quality DVD player that will help you get rid of alot of old VCR tapes you have laying around, this is a decently priced option.

After 4 months it stopped reading disks. I was pretty happy with it - while it worked. Spits them all out and says disk error.

picture freezes Sony knows it and has no time to help folks who bought the junk

She sent me to another person in some other country who said I had to pay to send it back. He took the info and gave me an E-number. I told he to forget it and I wanted to send the unit back. She sent me to another person, who got mad and hung up on me. Half way thru the story, he got mad and hung up. The quick start guide was unreabable. Got sent to anothet person who said I needed to get a E-number, and said to call the nex day because they were busy.

Sony is the very worst company to buy anything from. The large booklet was a little better. I could not get any signal whatever to the tv. Then and only then did I get an ok to send it back.

This may be a fine DVD Recorder, but I never found out. The only thing it would do was turn it off and on, and open the tray. After 2 days I called Sony customer service. I told her no, you messed up the order, you pay the shipping.

He said he coudn't do that. Trying to read the manual I discovered I needed to set the input line source. Do not expect any customer support. The worst thing was the remote control. Called the next day and requested an E-number.

First, when I opened the manual I discovered it was a copy of a copy of a copy. But, you guessed it, that needed to be done with the remote. He needed to hear the entire story again. 2 very big problem.

Called again and got a person who spoke english. ( I think, hard to understand). Got sent to another person who wanted to know the reason why I wanted to send it back.

NEVER,and I mean never, order a refurbished DVD recorder from Sony. I called again and another person said she needed to take the info and send me another remote and book, but I couldn't get for another 10 days. Just got mine last week.

The first lady I talked to said the book was not available, and she didn't think the remote was availabe. It took only 2 of us to read it. It was the wrong one.

None of the people I talked to could care less.
