We still have a lot of VHS tapes and are getting more DVDs and this product allows us to play either. A better deal in the long run would be to get one that can make a 'back-up' personal-use copy of a VHS onto a DVD of those tapes you have made of the kids.
I've had this unit for almost 2 years. Always works well and is easy to use with the progressive scan feature. I needed an inexpensive replacement for my broken DVD player. Looks good on my lcd tv.
I'll never buy Wal-Mart electronics again no matter what the brand. If you are playing a tape the mechanism is very loud the whole time. I had the same troubles as these other reviewers. I've had to turn up the volume on my TV to be able to hear over it. After about three months (just past the 90-day warranty) the DVD side stopped working and displays an error message when you insert a disc. The VCR side is okay, but very noisy. If you have a tape in the machine it has a loud grinding sound whether the tape is playing or not. I asked for and received one as a Christmas gift, but I wish I had asked for something else.
Unfortunately, this was one of those products where a known brand cut corners to keep prices down. I trusted the Sanyo name, having had a good experience with some other Sanyo products. Don't be fooled by the vendor, the DVW was manufactured especially for Wal-Mart. If the tape is stopped, the grinding sound will go away after a minute or two, but it's so maddening that I always end up just ejecting it.
Turns out it has a really weird function where you have to hit the DVD Subtitle button to put it into timer set mode. I have had good luck with everything I've tried in the DVD player thus far. This function seems to work okay although the fact that it defaults to the DVD mode until you hit the subtitle button again when you turn it back on it a little strange.
I haven't really tried using the program timer to record shows until last night and found that it didn't work. The video quality with this VCR hasn't dazzled me, but it is okay for most of what I tape and record. I got this VCR last Christmas after my 15 year old VCR began to only record and play in black and white for some reason and cleaning didn't fix it.
I haven't noticed the squealing while playing, but it is VERY noisy when rewinding. I thought it would be nice to have a VCR/DVD combo hooked up to the TV and the price for one was better than just a VCR. My parents found this for me.
Apparently I've had better luck than others and I would recommend it to someone looking to save and not have that much quality or the best ease of use.
It states that it cannot read it. Now, no matter what DVD you put in it, no mattter how well you clean it or even if it's new, the player will not play it. My mom purchased this DVD/VCR for my daughter as a gift a couple of months before giving it to her. My daughter was only able to use the DVD player a couple of times. My mom couldn't find the receipt and I threw away the box, so we kept it.The VCR does work, but I have also experienced the sqeaking mentioned in another review.
