Editorial Reviews:

The Toshiba D-R5 Multi-Drive DVD Recorder allows users to record and playback their favorite videos in stunning MPEG-2 digital video on a DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-VR, or DVD-RW formatted discs. DivX Home Theater Certification allows playback of DivX, AVI and MPEG4 (.ASF) compressed files downloaded from the Internet from a personal computer and stored on a CD-R/RW. The D-R5's convenient HDMI output includes both digital audio and video signals in one cable for uncompressed single wire connection of home theater components to the television. HD JPEG will provide the ability to view Megapixel images in their enhanced resolution when using HDMI and an HDTV display device.

User Comments about the Toshiba D-R5 Multi Drive DVD Recorder

Video was nice when it worked. It also claims DVD's are 'BAD' about 90% of the time when they play just fine in my older dvd/vcr combo machine. Skip this one. Less than 2 years old and the HDMI stopped working. The person claimed that 'could finish dinner while waiting for the tray to open' is right - and you could add 'I could cook dinner while waiting for it to determine that my dvd is bad.'

However I am just using this machine just to copy my other recorded stuff and compressed them in one DVD. Somehow they have now stopped making machines like this kind that records in "middle speed" which can compress videos up to three hours in one DVD and still in good quality. I find that the LP speed reduces a lot of the picture quality when finalized in one DVD disc and the SP speed is only good for 2 hours in one DVD disc. This is almost a perfect machine that has all the speeds I've needed in recording my own media. The only thing I don't like about this machine is that, even though I've bought it brand new, there's still some defect in the audio of some of the channels, like it's muted or no audio at all. Why record in 2 hours when you can compressed it in 3 hours in one DVD disc.

So far this is a glorified (and incredibly slow-loading) player. Talked to so-called customer support who informed me that refurbed units may be more finicky than new. A week after the 3 month refurb warranty ended the unit stopped sending output through any output (HDMI, Component, Composite, Svideo). Bought this refurbed to get an inboard tuner.BIG MISTAKE on many fronts. more problems recognizing media.pretty useless already, and a lot of money invested in useless media. Customer service indicated they would probably help me out under the circumstances, then said too bad. Unit would not work with Maxell and a couple other brands of -rw's, then tried dvd-ram.did get a few -r recordings which won't play out on other equipment. I've been a big supporter of toshiba products in the past, but this poor product and their lack of support have taught me a valuable lesson.STAY AWAY FROM THESE PRODUCTS

I got it because it was the cheapest recorder I could find, and I guess you get what you pay for. After a few months it wouldn't record new discs, but unfortunately for me that was after the 90-day warrantee on labor ran out. I bought this player/recorder 11 months ago, and now I have to get a new one because it no longer works. Now it occasionally refuses to play store-bought DVDs that work fine on other players, so I'm junking it.As for functionality, the rewind is pretty annoying, because it doesn't come close to stopping where you release the button, even if you are in the slowest scan mode.

The Toshiba has proven easy to use and in playback produces a good picture. The product arrived quickly and in excellent condition. I am very pleased with the product.
