We use it in our elementary school & my 5th graders have no problem with it. It's actually easier to use than other more expensive mics are. This mic is so easy to use. The quality of the audio is excelent.
it lowers the overall audio level sharply, causing the level of the speaker's voice to drop very noticibly. It has an overly sensitive, built-in audio limiter and as soon as the microphone picks up additional sound (glass beads in a vase, etc). Then when the background noise ends, the speaker's voice level pops back up. I read the positive reviews for this prior to purchase. We were trying to use it for recording "how to" demonstrations and it was not suitable for that use. There is no manual adjustment to the audio limiter - that would solve this problem. For home video/audio recording it might work fine. Because of the over reactive audio limiter we had to return this product.
After researching, we decided to purchase this microphone to use on our recent backpacking trip to Colorado. We love this microphone. My husband and I love to hike and backpack and we like to set-up our video camera to record the scenery around us when we stop for meals and breaks but we always had to have the camera real close to us in order to pick-up our voices clearly. The microphone picked up our voices clearly even when we had the video camera as far away as 75 feet from us so that the beautiful mountain scenery would be recorded also.My only regret is that we didn't purchase this microphone when we first bought our video camera.
I could hear my subjects well, but also picked up a conversation from two people at the other end of the canopy about 40 feet away, oh, and airplanes, busses, trucks, etc. That said, I still recommend this solution. Just get the little wireless microphone unit reasonbly close to your subject(s) and shoot. This little jewel is still a condenser-type microphone, similar to the one on the camera, designed for picking up sounds from a bit of a distance. The quality is typical of video camera mics, the convenience of just place and shoot is great, and the bluetooth connection works reliably. I've used it with very good results.
At one point I was recording under a canopy at a park. The advantage, of course, is that you have the ability to put the center of the sound further away, presumably closer to your subject.I have used wireless dynamic lapel mics for camera interview work and typically, they sound much warmer and reject more background noise. As an experienced sound guy for live events, I have a pretty good handle on sound quality for microphones. If I were doing professional video work, I would use professional dynamic mics instead of this set. However, you can't beat the convenience for this unit. I'd buy it again.
As such, the sound quality is similar to the microphones on the camera itself. Just don't expect to go pro with it.
I used it making ski movies and it picks up the voice at least 200 yards away. I also just use my ipod ear buds to hear what is being recorded instead of using a bulky headphone. This is probably the best accessory to buy for this camera if you want good quality audio sound for recording voice.
