Sirius reception was spotty - signal kept dropping and I kept nudging the the indoor antenna to get reception again - like someone kept moving the satellite. Installed this outdoor antenna haven't had a reception problem since.
Don't know the technicals but even if you need to coil up the extra cable, it isn't a bad investment if you have already bought the radio, the service, the antenna and the boom box. Be sure to buy the extension cable containing the signal booster. Bought the boom box and the only thing it boomed was an intermittent signal and the label, "Acquiring Signal". We have the requisite N-by-NW view but the window antenna module did not do the job with only 3 bars on the strength-o-meter.This antenna solved the problem and we now have the strongest signal possible for satellite reception (we do not have a terrestrial antenna location close-by).Wonderful. What is a little more for the extension cable.
I did not measure it, but the boom appears to be about 10"to 12".This gave me plenty of room to clear my gutter.Update 11-2-08. Mounting screws and U-bolts for pole mounting are provided. The boom the antenna is mounted on is adjustable by a few turns of a phillips head screw. It's rare these days to be able to give five stars to an electronic component.I went from 2-3 bars to 10 bars with this product. The only thing I would mention is that at least a 3/8" hole is needed to get the cable outside. You will either have to drill a hole or leave your window open as this cable is almost as thick as a regular coaxal cable (like a TV cable). Also, you need to use oversized (head) screws because the mounting holes are designed to use U-bolts. Working great.
I don't usually write reviews, but I love this antenna, I get to listen to Howard Stern again. I place this antenna in the same place I placed the one that comes with the docking kit, before I had no reception, now I have great reception, it's very easy to hook up and seems very durable.
With this one you will never have to do that again. Oh well, this antenna works excellent. It sends out it signal very strong and you will have good reception on your unit.
Where I live, there is no signal from ground and I was constantly having to climb to the peak of my roof to reposition the little antenna that came standard. At least I don't have to deal with those incessant commercials that you get with FM, TV, looking out your car windows. As with most companies, Directed Electronics gives us a product that does not work well without an upgrade.
Consumerism run rampant. So here we are buying extra equipment that should come standard. Does that say something about the world we live in.
Didn't think you were gonna get some philosophy with this review, did ya.
