When I took the laptop out, the adapter was bent at a 90 degree angle and the cover had snapped open. I noticed that the plug was soldered on very solidly, so I carefully bent it back into it's original shape, and after finding the other half of the case, I snapped it back on. I plugged it back into the computer, and lo and behold, it still works. I've had my adapter for about a year. Today, I left it in my laptop when packing it up on accident and broke the heck out of it without noticing. I use it with my phone and with my portable printer, and it is working fine.
Device profiles regularly disappear. Packets are regularly dropped. I initially tried to use with Dragon Naturally Speaking, but after so many minutes of use, recognition would drop to nearly zero - then I would go back to listen to the sound files, and they would be completely unintelligible.I just can't say enough bad things about this unit. This bluetooth adapter has never worked well. Connections are regularly dropped. =
So I researched online and found this Kensington, which I installed on my computer last night. Installation was a snap on my HP Windows Vista computer and the phone was immediately recognized by the computer once Kensington was installed. The hot synch went flawlessly and I am now able to enjoy the benefits of this blue tooth technology with my Palm Smart Phone, which will be my preference for doing the hot synch, even after the compatible software is released. I bought this Kensington Blue Tooth USB Adapter to allow me to synchronize my Palm Centro Smart Phone with my HP 64 bit laptop computer. The Palm Centro Smart Phone is not compatible with 64 bit computers and the tech support at Palm said the company is working to develop a compatible software, but that a blue tooth synch would be the alternative. I would highly recommend this blue tooth adapter.
So I am guessing that you need to have the adapter installed in order for the software to run. I can't remember if I had tried it that way the times when I got the error messages. You go to http://us.kensington.com/html/1492.html and download Kensington Bluetooth USB Adapter 2.0 (Rev. Weird.I was able to use dial-up with the cell phone and it worked just fine. Now, about half of the software installed and half of it failed. Since this is the main app I am interested in I am OK with this adapter at this time. I was getting pretty discouraged when I saw the "failed" error messages.
I then tried to install the Toshiba stack on the Kensington website, and naturally that failed. Also, I kept getting VISTA windows popping up saying that it couldn't find the software, that there were compatibility errors, ick.So I rebooted and double clicked on the BT icon that now appeared in the task bar. I added my cell phone as a device and the rest of the BT software drivers installed successfully for that device. Well after 4 hours I finally got this to work in VISTA Home Premium. I quit the Toshiba installation (while the adapter was still plugged in) and then retried btwinitialupdate.exeThis time it started to execute. 5.1.0.1700 and Rev. 6.0.1.5100)Now, I tried to execute the http://update.broadcom.com/downloads/btwinitialupdate.exe 6 times and kept getting VISTA errors that the attempt failed.
I am glad I got it to work.KENSINGTON 33348 Bluetooth USB 2.0 Adapter
I run a printer, mouse, keyboard, and PDA sync through it. No problems and works great.
