Editorial Reviews:

In the heydays of domestic life of post World War II, nearly each home had a clock radio situated in the kitchen or bedroom. Teac SLD96 is a likely replica of that type of radio but with modifications to suit 21st century use. Tubes are replaced by transistors. Monaural sound is replaced by stereo. A CD player is added. AM/FM analog radio tuning is upgraded to digital-tuning with 10 AM and 10 FM selectable presets. It has built-in speakers for stereo sound and a jack for using an optional headphone for listening in private. There's also a port for connecting an (optional) iPod or MP3 player so you can listen to tracks through the speakers. It even has a wireless remote control. If you're into the nostalgic visions of 20th century living, yet appreciate entertainment in the 21st century, this table radio is just right for you. User Comments about the TEAC SL-D96B CD Player Radio (Black)

Doesn't close as easily as it might. Also, be aware that this unit generates heat. I'm a little concerned about the CD door. It can warm up a room, noticably. The remote could be better designed, too.

Now I have two with the remote control and two without. I liked my first TEAC SL-D80 that I bought a couple of years ago so much that I've purchased three more since. For the price, they have excellent sound and who wouldn't like a radio that looks like the grille of an old-skool truck.

And the sound is better than expected, producing decently deep bass. You can view the time for four seconds by pressing a button, but you can't make the unit display the time steadily unless you turn the radio/cd off.

For me, though, there was one problem that led to my returning the unit: When the radio is on, the station is displayed instead of the time. And it can't be changed.

I bought this unit to use as a great-sounding clock radio. While getting ready for work and listening to the radio, keeping an eye on the time is key for me.

And it fits the bill--almost. First of all, the design is great if you like retro.

So, the hunt continues.
