It not only teaches letters, but encourages the kids to draw objects too, like a queen and an igloo. It helped him develop an interest in drawing and writing that he did not have before (due to his lack of fine motor control). My developmentally disabled 6 year old LOVES this toy. He got it last Christmas, it has been used and abused and still works like new. Awesome toy.
The problem is that it always says that they did a great job, even if they did not draw the letter or shape correctly. This toy has a really great idea. If the toy would tell them to try again when they got it wrong, then I would give it 4 stars.
Now, he turns it on and comes to get me to help him write. He still isn't doing it independently, but with my hand guiding him, he's getting better at writing. We received this as a gift for my son's 5th birthday. Most importantly, he's excited about writing now. I've begun having him use the toy to give him the instruction, but write the letter on paper instead of the toy's pad. My son has Autism, and until we got this toy he had no interest in writing letters. This will help him transition to writing in school.
My daughter like playing with the writting skills. This is a lovely toy. Very fast shipping.
She is 3 and it is something that will grow with her, it allows her to learn her letters, draw shapes and also doodle - it makes learning really fun and we both really enjoy it together, it's great in the car on trips too. My daughter just loves this toy. Great buy for the money and I would give this as a gift also because it's really fun and for some reason kids just love the big yellow pencil character on it very cute.
