IT WOULD BE NICE IF IT HAD MANUAL CONTROLS FOR BASS AND TREBLE BUT IT DOES HAVE ENOUGH POWER SO THAT MY KIDS CAN HAVE THE VOLUME TURNED UP "TOO" LOUD. THE SOUND QUALITY IS GREAT FOR A MIDSIZE AREA. GOOD SYSTEM FOR THE PRICE. I PURCHASED THIS SYSTEM FOR OUR WORK OUT/GAME ROOM. MY ONLY COMPLAINT IS AMAZON ADVERTISED THAT IT USUALLY SHIPS WITHIN 1-2 DAYS, IT WAS MORE LIKE A WEEK BEFORE IT WENT TO FEDEX.
We have just taken the components out of the box & set them on our 10" shelves, as the dimensions listed the unit @ 9.75 X 10" X 7.5". imagine our dismay to find the receiver has a fan AND another add-on to the back which requires a shelf at least 12".We have yet to finish unpacking, as we're PISSED.
I must also include, that while moving the stereo, I caused one of the speakers to fall a good distance and land on its face, the cover (which is made to be removable) did break off, but otherwise it still works perfectly. The bass certainly has a presence, and rounds out the whole sound quality well. This small stereo has even better sound than expected. I have only found preset Eqs, which I had initial concerns about, but they all sound terrific. The dvd player works very well too.
I got it for Christmas. Everything is clearly labeled. The one complaint I have is that it does not say what the song title is on CD's. So, 4.5 stars out of 5. I have it at work. It does not play Windows Media Audio files.
Update 1-3-05. no complaints. I'll update this review in a few weeks as I spend more time with it. I have been listening to this for a good couple weeks now, and love the sound quality still.
The remote is easy to use, and so are the buttons on the unit. The only trouble is that I keep zoning out at work listening to the music. The sound is great on this. I had no trouble figuring it out.
I like it because I can burn a DVD worth of music and play it at work, or listen to DVD Audio disks. The multi-function remote works well. I will burn a DVD of MP3's to see if that works.
This was confirmed when I got home and was able to play some bass-heavy hip hop then followed by a MFSL Pink Floyd CD. In short, very crisp and "thumpy" when necessary. Just something to spin my CD's. In fact, I recently watched "Sin City" in the system and the picture was crystal clear with sound quality as good as a modest home theater system. Additionally, the equalizer has multiple settings which allows the user to change the sound profile accordingly. As the previous review indicates, the styling of this unit is conservative in comparison to most manufacturers. What else do you need. All things considered, the Sony name has always represented quality electronics, so it was a pretty easy decision for me. The wood skin on the speakers has a nice color that will probably match most decors.
Based on sound quality alone, the Sony shined. The button and display appearance is stripped down and easy to navigate. What really sold me on this particular system is that there is a DVD player integrated. This was perfect, because I was in the market for both and now I have both with a single purchase. I originally was in the market just to replace my malfunctioning compact audio system. Comparable units by JVC, Panasonic and Sharp didn't seem to have the same clarity throughout the highs, mids, and lows. After taking a look at all the different makes and models, it started to become a difficult decision. While at Best Buy, I tried a lot of compact systems.
Space in my condo is very much a premium and this system fits beautifully in all respects.
