User Comments about the Philips DVP642 DivX-Certified Progressive-Scan DVD Player

This is due to a Capacitor failure. If you have good eyes and a steady hand with a soldering iron it can be fixed in about 45 min with a $1.59 capacitor from Radio Shack. I did the following to mine today when it failed after two years, instructions for the procedure are available online. However people don't pay money to do this work themselves. This was a gift from my wife for Christmas two years ago. As a DVD player it gives a great picture and also allows me to play region 2 DVD's which comes in handy for my British copies of the 1950's series of "The Adventures of Robin Hood" (American versions have since become available). The big problem is the failure rate on the devices, the power button flashes and nothing happens. If you would rather not have to do this (and eventually you WILL need to ) then go with another model, if you don't mind the tinkering then it is a good player.

I loved this machine for about the first year I had it. Now it won't turn on and my roommate's crappy chick flick is stuck in it :/

I also got it because it reads burned DVDs and at the time seemed to be one of the few that did that. Was one of the lower priced models at the time, but is still working in 2008 and reads perfectly. This is a great little DVD player I've had since 2004. Originally got it due to not having a DVD player and wanting to start getting and watching them. I know everything is going HD with Blu Ray, but if you are looking for a simple DVD player I would get this one.

It even plays my "home-made" discs. That makes it a must-have. This is a great DVD player. It's SO good, that I've recommended it to all my friends & I've even bought one for my parents.

I also gave one to my sis for x-mas a couple of years ago and she hasn't had any problems with it. Many DVD players are no longer shipping with the S-VIDEO port. I wasn't looking for anything fancy when I purchased this DVD player. If you have an older TV with no HD ports like HDMI or Component but still want decent video quality, this is should do the job just fine. It's also slim and is not ugly. I needed a DVD player with a slim profile, still has S-VIDEO and is cheap; this fit the bill and works great. I've been using it for a year now with no issues and my sister has gone 2 years with hers with no issues either.
