User Comments about the TEAC MC-D85 Digital Audio Micro System

The CD transport is smooth and relatively quiet. The only sign of low power is the speaker output terminals which are spring clips handling cables up to 16 gauge. The speakers work well and here again the fit and finish is exceptional for this price range. The MCD-85 is based on the Reference series that is widely popular in many European and Asian countries where space is a premium. The unit is a mini-reciever and cd player in one. Works at relatively short distances though - about 6ft.Around $200 new and $60 for a refurbed unit - there are very few systems which can match the performance and none that could match the build quality. The veneer covers all sides and dome tweeter and small woofer and back porting provides good imaging. I highly recommend this system for a smaller bedroom or dorm. It comes with gold plated binding posts which support spade and banana plug terminated cables.

The class D amplifier is clean and crisp and will handle efficient bookshelf speakers with ease to an uncomfortable volume in a smaller room. (odd considering the main unit has spring clips) Don't expect a ton of bass with these but they are solid built and sound great within their design. Classical/jazz/vocals all sound incredible - with good separation - creating a soundstage usually associated with much higher end systems costing many times more.Remote - controls the unit as well as an optional mini-disc and tape casset player (which I've not been able to find). In the USA TEAC is not well known for their reference mini-systems. The tuner section is simple and pulls in stations my home stereo tuner has a hard time with. The build quality is exceptional for something in this price range. The front facia is aluminum, the unit is stabilized with 4 sizable legs/dampners, and the volume knob operates with smooth ease and fine steppings.

Get decent speaker cables and that would be all that is needed.
