Adjusting the tracking only lets you move the lines up and down the screen. There is no way to remove the tracking lines. Move the lines off and the picture starts jumping. I had two Panasonic VCRs that worked flawlessly for almost 10 years. As other users have noted the tracking totally stinks, especially when watching tapes recorded on another VCR. It has also chewed up two tapes so bad that I had to take the cover off just to remove the tape. I replaced one of them with this Sony model and have had several problems after only one year. Sony makes good high-end electronics, but they must outsource this cheap stuff to some lousy contractor.
It sounds like a high powered drill when it re-winds. Same for fast-forwarding too. I havn't had a problem with mine in the past 2 years since I bought it. When I record a movie with it, the tape actually sounds better from when it was on TV. The timer-recorder is very dependable. This has been an excellent VCR. The hi-fi stereo makes a big difference.
I often use a head-cleaner tape which seems to be keeping the picture quality clear and sharp. It produces a more rich and full-filling sound with the music and voices in the movie. It also produces excellent base sound. I noticed the many negative reviews on this VCR and was surprized. A 2-hour tape re-winds in just 1 minute. I use it quite frequently and record quite frequently also. The quality of recorded programs is very good if you use a new, blank tape.
Consumer Reports Magazine rated it a best buy.

Cons:1. It chewed my kid's Lion King and Winnie the Pooh cassettes.3. Supposed to rewind fast. Fast Forward didn't work after one year.Pros:Are you kidding.I didn't have much problem with picture quality. But it takes many seconds to start the rewind.2. Chews cassettes. I am a die hard Sony fan.
I had to replace it with another after about a year. My TV that I purchased 10 years ago is still working like new despite moving many times. But this VCR is just the opposite. But overall this is a bad product.
Or they got real lucky. Or the heads aren't clean and believe me I've tried everything to get this machine up and running and.but still huge, giant, fuzziness and streaks play throughout.they fade in and out and in and out.can you say GARBAGE.can't watch a single thing without losing your mind. Or I got real unlucky but less than three months, it now has to be replaced.
I laugh when I see what amazing reviews this thing has gotten.they must work for Sony. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER SONY VCR. This is to spare everyone else out there the headache I have had with this particular VCR.
I've had it less than three months and the tracking can't/isn't working. Mine is 100% junk. Useless.
It will find it's rightful place in the world.a dumpster.
